I know some of this is fairly obvious, but I wanted to include everything I could think of. Headphones A good pair of headphones (in the $150 - $200 range) is essential. That does not mean a headset or any gaming themed piece of garbage. I personally prefer open back headphones because they are not only more comfortable but they also give you a much larger soundstage -- which really helps you to pinpoint enemy sounds. For anyone that is interested I use Sennheiser 598. Monitor A large monitor really helps in both spotting enemys and also making their hitboxes physically larger (Imagine how impossible it would be to line up a headshot on a 5" monitor). But if you do get a bigger monitor make sure it has a decent enough resolution. For 1080p you really don't want to go above 25". I personally use a 32" monitor with a 1440p resolution which I sit about two feet away from. Mouse Using a low sensitivity will help with your accuracy. I set my DPI to 800 and I use a sensitivity of 1.30. You also want to configure your crosshair to be very small; I have mine set to only extend out a couple of pixels on each side. A mouse with thumb buttons can be very useful to bind those buttons to grenades. A decent mouse is obviously important, but even more important is a mouse pad. A good mouse pad will give you much better accuracy and help you to better control your movements. I recommend mouse pads which have a cloth-like material. If you already have a mouse pad like that and it's fairly old then try cleaning it out with warm water, soap, and a scrub brush -- it will drastically improve it's performance. Noise Making a lot of noise is one of the top things that will get you killed. I probably spend more time walking than I do running to avoid footstep sounds. I also try to avoid giving up my position by flashing first. Flashes can be avoided by turning around quickly, so it's much more useful to just have the element of surprise. And I try to avoid walking over grenades if I think an enemy is close. Camping Camping in a corner and never moving is almost always a bad idea. Because of how network latency and game servers work you will almost always be at a disadvantage. Basically, your opponents game client will know your position because you are not moving but you are at the mercy of your own ping to get updates on the enemy location. This is why if you watch me I will usually pop out of the corner at somewhat frequent intervals or if I hear someone approaching. Minimap The minimap is a huge tactical tool, I probably spend at least 40% of my time watching it. Not only does it show enemy locations but you can also use it to find gaps in the map and predict (with relativly good accuracy) where the enemys are. Weapons It seems as though the people who complain the most about hackers are the ones who only use the P90 and refuse to use anything else. You will NEVER be a consistant top player if you don't master the the M4 and/or the AK. The P90 however is definitly the best choice on small maps or in close quarters combat. Stay Calm This was one of the hardest things for me to improve on. Take a little more time to line up headshots and get better at avoiding being hit by moving side to side. Having a calm state of mind while being shot at is very difficult, but if you are able to do it, you will be at a huge advantage. This is something that when practicing you have to actively tell yourself so that you can try to improve upon it. Stay Focused I try to stay focused on the objectives each round and don't mess around too much, this alone is a huge contributor to being consistanly good. Most people are much less focused on winning and more so on just havivg fun -- which is perfectly fine! However, trying to be more focused will definitly help you. I also play to have fun and I continue to play on this server because I genuinely enjoy playing with all of you. Practice In the end it just comes down to practice. Knowing the maps, the camping spots, and most importantly your opponents. Having over 2,000 hours in this game certainly isn't the most but it is a lot, and I have learned quite a bit over the years. | ||
